- Ronny H., 02/22/2019This is a really nice design. I added a mid control to the circuit to be able to fine tune the EQ a little more. Besides putting in a ECC99, I also switched V1(12AX7) to a 5751. This gave a little more headroom and great harmonics. Perfekt for blues and rock. Very pleased with the sound. /Ronny Hogland also switched V1(12AX7) to a 5751. go to post - Joel C., 07/03/2017I bought this kit as a basis for future modifications for my trials... but after trying it (with ECC99), I totally dig the sound and feel of the amp: very responsive, with a surprisingly good smooth clean sound when rolling back guitar volume and a great sustaining and singing distortion at higher gains! But beware, with ECC99 (recommended tube: great tone) it is pretty loud, even with a master volume. In the end, I will just keep it as it is and build a nice encloser for it; it is too good to tinker with its circuit;-) Dirk did a really good job at designing this lower power version of the Trainwreck style amps, and all components are of very high quality. The modular approach with separate power supply PCB helps to build it quite fast and check your build step by step. If you are a beginner, just read very carefully the diagrams and indications: everything is there but this require some concentration to follow. Now for my experimentations, I think I will go for a scratch build, because if all other LoW TubeTown amps are as good as this one, I will always keep them in their original form and not care moding them ;-) very responsive, with a surprisingly good smooth clean sound when rolling back guitar volume and a great sustaining and singing distortion at higher gains! go to post - Sergey S., 11/14/2016Great little amp. I dont have the Trainwreck to compare with but from what I heard on Youtube the sound tends to be close to the original. I did not have any difficulties with the kit, even though it was my first amp that I fully assembled myself - the layout on the forum page is sufficiently explicit. I did't like that much the veroboard. It is quite small and if you want to use, let's say, different kind of resistors like RN65D, they may not fit. But that's not really a problem. All the parts provided are of a good quality. And besides that is why the amp is relatively small. I put a ECC99 tube and it is veeery loud ) Overall impressions: really good sounding amp for such a small price! have any difficulties with the kit, even though it was my first amp that I fully assembled myself - the layout on the forum page is sufficiently explicit. Built it as my first project, and it worked perfectly on the first power-up!
Sounds great with my two guitars:
Japanese Strat with Duncan SSL-1 pickups
Japanese LP Custom with Duncan SH-1 and SH-4 pickups
I've also used a reactive load with a speaker sim—can't wait to try it with a real speaker!
Advice for New Amp Builders:
???? Measure all parts before soldering them onto the board.
???? Write down all measurement results for each component.
???? Only solder parts after placing all of them on the board.
???? Take your time—do anything only when you're 100% sure of what you're doing.
????Watch carefully pictures provided on project page, they're really helpful.
It'll pay off 200%!
Good luck! ???????? /> Japanese Strat with Duncan SSL-1 pickups
